Initial Situation
The client, a mid-sized logistics provider with 350 employees in the DACH region, was reaching the limits of its IT infrastructure.
The existing monitoring solution provided isolated metrics for servers, networks, and applications. IT staff had to manually correlate these data points, which led to lengthy diagnosis times during incidents.
The Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR) averaged 4.2 hours. Each outage of the telematics platform cost the company an estimated 15,000 EUR per hour in productivity and customer retention.
Implementation
We implemented a correlative Application Performance Monitoring (APM) system that enabled end-to-end tracing across the entire supply chain.
The implementation phase lasted 12 weeks and included the following steps:
- Instrumentation: Integration of all microservices of the telematics platform and database clusters.
- Topology Mapping: Automated detection of dependencies between edge devices, cloud services, and on-premise servers.
- Alerting Logic: Transition from threshold-based alerts to anomaly detection with automatic root cause analysis.
We utilized a modern APM platform that seamlessly integrated with the existing ITSM tool. The configuration of business transactions was based directly on the KPIs of the logistics processes.
Result
After full deployment, the system showed immediate improvements in incident diagnosis.
Key metrics after six months of operation:
- MTTR: Reduction from 4.2 to 1.5 hours (-65%).
- Diagnosis Time: Average time to identify the source of the error decreased from 90 to 15 minutes.
- False Positives: The number of unnecessary alerts was reduced by 80%, relieving the workload on the NOC team.
The investment paid for itself by the third quarter through avoided downtime costs and reduced personnel effort for incident handling.
Learnings
Correlative monitoring is not an end in itself, but an enabler for rapid decision-making.
For the client, the decisive factor was that the APM system did not only display technical metrics but placed them in the context of business processes.
IT decision-makers should pay attention to automated topology detection when selecting tools, as manual mapping quickly becomes outdated in dynamic cloud environments. Additionally, integration into existing workflows is crucial to ensure acceptance within the team.
Results
- -65% – Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR)
- 15 min – Average diagnosis time
- -80% – Number of false positives
